Give God a Chance

He who is of God hears God’s words…

John 8:47

God wants us to listen. He gave us one mouth and two ears so that we would hear twice as much as we speak. When we come before God, we need to listen and not just talk and talk and talk. He’s been listening to us. He’s up 24/7 and already knows what we desire. But if all we do is tell Him our plans, and tell Him our wants, and let Him in on what we are going to do, that’s not prayer. Prayer is a two-way communication. We say “I want to go here,” or “I want to do that,” or “I’m going to marry so-and-so,” or “I’m going to take a vacation,” and then we’re done. We’ve ended our prayer time. We didn’t even give God a chance to say “no” or “yes” or “I want to bless you.” We didn’t give Him a chance to answer. Part of the reason why is because we think we know His answer already, but now we can feel good in our hearts since we already told God what we are up to—we did our contractual part. However, when things fall apart, and did not turn out what we had hoped, God will say, “You didn’t want to hear the truth. And the truth is that in your heart, you knew that I was going to say, ‘no,’ but you proceeded with your plans anyway.” Can you imagine talking to your spouse and never allowing them to speak in return? We must let God speak. He has wonders that He wants to share with us. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” Isaiah 55:8–9. But we were hasty with our decision because this was such a “great deal” and if we didn’t move on it, we were going to lose it. Well, if it seems too good to be true, then it’s too good to be true. Today, stop and wait on the Lord. Give God a chance to move in a wonderful way.
